Art & Music
Dept. Head: Kerry-Lee Hunt
At Westminster, our Art & Music department is committed to fostering individual growth, creativity, and a sense of community. The music program offers classes in guitar, winds (band), and electronic music composition. Beyond classroom learning, students have the chance to join extracurricular ensembles such as Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Music Council. We believe in creating an inclusive, supportive environment where students can thrive in their artistic pursuits.
Our art classes complement the music program, offering students the chance to explore visual expression through painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media. Together, the Art & Music department inspires creativity, builds technical skills, and encourages collaboration through various projects and showcases.
Unique Learning Opportunities
Westminster students have the opportunity to explore the arts through the SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) program, which provides additional free learning experiences such as field trips to performances, workshops, and more. Collaborative shows featuring music, art, dance, and drama students are presented each fall and spring. Our first showcase will be on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
Student Testimonials
"The main reason I keep participating in music is because of the supportive environment. My teacher is amazing and always available to help. I have breathing problems, so at first, I was disappointed to learn there were no string instruments available. However, when I found out they offered percussion, I got really excited. I didn’t know much about percussion at first, but once I learned about the variety of instruments that wouldn’t trigger my asthma, I was thrilled. They also have music clubs like concert band and jazz band, where we get to perform for the school. Honestly, it’s the one thing that’s really keeping me motivated to stay in school."
